Health and Safety Responsibilities

This unit focuses on explaining what is meant by ‘health and safety’ and how this relates to a school context. It also defines key terminology which will help you to better understand health and safety issues.

Aims and outcomes

By the end of this unit, you should understand:

  • the scope and nature of health and safety
  • the historical context of health and safety in relation to educational establishments
  • the legal, financial and moral reasons for promoting good standards of health and safety awareness and good practice across the school
  • the division of responsibilities in school in relation to health and safety
  • how these responsibilities extend towards others
  • key health and safety terminology.
